I welcome Kildare County Council’s appointment of RPS consultants to carry out the feasibility study on the Liffey Bridge and associated junction in Celbridge. The congestion on and around the bridge has been an issue for many years now and a solution is long overdue. I have worked with the Tidy Towns on highlighting the issues at this location since becoming a Councillor. The ultimate solution would be a new bridge but given the time and money involved, a new bridge could be some time away.
In the meantime there is a deliverable solution and this proposal was put together by the Tidy Towns which I presented to K.C.C two years ago and has assisted in funding been provided for this study. The solution is to remove the current footpath of the bridge, install boardwalks on the bridge linking in with the current zebra crossing, straightening the parapet walls and installing lantern lights on them. This proposal is deliverable over a two year period at a cost that can be afforded. It will improve safety and traffic movement while giving a very nice appearance at the town entrance. There is an opportunity now to deliver long over due improvements at this location in Celbridge. It may not be the perfect solution but it will improve the current situation for Residents, Business and all road users.
